Especially when read with the benefit of hindsight today and looked at from a historical perspective.
It is very technical and would probably only be appreciated by an electrical engineer. Not for the casual reader of pulp fiction! One person found this helpful.
Electrons And Holes In Semiconductors, With Applications To Transistor Electronics
This is an old book on semiconductors written by one of the pioneers of the transistor field. Despite semiconductofs age, I found it to be an extremely useful book from the point of view of understanding the fundamental processes involved in semiconductors.
Shockley explains the basic idea behind a transistor and WHY exactly does it amplify and how that is related to atomic processes. And the explanation for all the concepts proceeds from a physical explanation and then to the correct quantum mechanical one. To sum it up, if you want to know why the transistor works the way it does at the deepest level, then this is a very good book. I don’t think I can do justice reviewing a classic.
I will have to rebrush some of what I have read earlier, when I came across this in my college library and wanted to own it at some point of time, to say something useful here. The book reached in perfect condition, and well within the predicted time-frame.
Very good work by the vendor. This book came out very shortly after the first transistors were developed at Bell Labs by Nobel-Laureates-to-be Bardeen, Brattain, and Shockley in the mid to late ‘s. The role of this book seems to have been to bring electrical engineers up to speed on solid state devices without assuming any knowledge on their part of solid state physics or statistical mechanics.
Shockley provides this background, and in so doing establishes the notation for such things as quasi-fermi levels that are used in scientific journal articles. Shockley goes on to explain pn junctions, diodes, and transistors from the point of view of a solid state physicist, using such concepts as band gaps and chemical potentials. For the modern reader who would have usually acquired a knowledge of the relevant physics from previous courses and books before studying solid state devices, this book may seem somewhat redundant.
Still, if the reader keeps in mind the audience that Shockley intended to address, this book is still quite satisfying. I first encountered this book as recommended reading for a course on solid state electronics taught by a professor who had been one of Bardeen’s first graduate students.
I spoke with the professor after class about what a wonderful book this was–and he, of course, agreed–regarding Shockley as a true genius although only for his contributions in solid state physics and electronics–not for his wacky genetic ideas. I only wish that the professor had made this book required reading for the course–so that it would have been available at the university book store!
In the olden days, kids, books could not be ordered quickly enough to study for your course if the professor had not ordered the books in advance! For the person who wants to read a more recent treatment of the solid state physics of semiconductors, I would like to recommend Bastard’s book: Wave Mechanics Applied to Semiconductor Heterostructures. This is a classic and pioneering book in its field, and despite the notoriety that its subsequently Nobel-laureate author may have gained later in life, a masterly exposition of the basic ideas of semiconductor physics by one of the pioneers in the field, well worth scanning today.
It presents among other things the “tilted parking garage” model to explain how holes in the valence band behave exactly like electrons in the conduction band — except for an apparently positive charge for the holes. But is this a legitimate offer for this book?

If you wanted to get a better physical understanding of semiconductors, then this is your book. Written by the nobel prize winner and founder of silicon valley. Shockley obviously understood electrons at a very physical level as well as mathematical. The diagrams are very helpful Am I really the first person to review this?
